I have recently bought a DeWalt 12 1/2″ planer and have experienced some problems (?) with the feed rolls. They do not seem to be able to feed the stock through on their own. I was taking 1/32″ cuts on 10″ wide elm boards. I have had the same problem on 6″ wide white ash.
Any thoughts??
Thanks

I have the same machine (actually a 12"), and occasionally I find it hard to plane much less than a 1/16". Try experimenting with cut depths with some scrap. Also might want to double check your balde alignment - make sure they're seated properly.
*you should have no problem planing 1/32". I have the 12" and rarely plane anything over 1/32. I typically plane 1/64. In my opinion 1/16" is a fairly deep cut especially if you are planing dificult boards.. I would take it back.
*I have the same machine. I have feeding problems when the boards are rough, or when they are longer than 6 feet. In either case they need careful guiding & support. I assumed this was a factor of the rubber rollers on this portable tool, -but I find it manageable.Have you checked that the rollers are parallel to everything else?
*Well, last night I got around to messing with the machine again. The first two things I did to it made a HUGE difference. First off I cleaned the feed rolls with rubbing alchohol, I then replaced the blunt objects formerly known as knives with a fresh, sharp set. What a difference. I didn't realize how dull the old ones were. These two things along with the aforementioned careful guiding have made a vast improvement. Thanks for your help.
*You got it Mark, I am just running some 100 yr old 2"x 10"x 10'through mine and the feed is getting sluggish, time to replace the blades. When the feed gets slow the blades are fighting the feed rolls!
*try waxing the bed. I have the same planer and I have to keep the bed waxed or it gets sluggish or won't pull the boards through...take small cuts and the blades will last longer too..
