I have the Dewalt portable table saw (DW744). Had it for about 4 years. Yesterday the motor burned out.
I’ve only used this for light duty homeowner use. Probably the harshest I’ve put it through was to rip some PT lumber once and rip a cedar 4×4 another time. Mostly use to work with 1 x.
The guy at the service center told me not to use an extension cord with it but that sounds ridiculous. The cord on it is only about 5 feet long if that. When I do use an ext cord, I use a 12 guage one thats 25 feet long. That should be ok no?
Anyone have similar problems with this saw? If I have to get a new one, should I get the Bosch portable? Or if I’m going to spend $500, what stationary saw would you guys recommend?

Larry; If I were buying a portable saw today, it would be a Bosch, no Question. That service guy is full of it. A 12ga., 25ft. cord is more than acceptable to power that saw. That motor failed prematurely, plain and simple.
I,m not a Dewalt basher, because I own a few Dewalt tools I am happy with, but I don't think the motors, and electronics they put in their machines are as high quality as what's offered in the top line models of brands like, Makita, Bosch, and Milwaukee.

Thanks Shawn. Do you think I should have it repaired? One tool store referred me to a local guy who isnt a Dewalt auth repair guy but said he would look at it. I think a new motor goes for $75 plus labor.
Or should I sell this for parts?
Toolsguy; If it were mine, and it was in really good condition, other than the motor, I might consider putting $125.00 into it it, if that would fix it. If it was much more than that, I would try and find a good deal on the Bosch.
That's my Two cents.

Larry,
I have this saw. Have had it for the past 4 years. I typically run hardwoods through it, alot of exotics, cocobolo, kingwood, rosewoods, etc, stuff that isn't easy on the saw. I have always used an extension cord and have no problems. Your motor died early. I love the saw, for what I do, right now. I have just started making large furniture (did small stuff before) and am running into a table top size problem. Other than that, it works fine.
Good luck.

Robin, would you put money into it greater than $200 to repair or just buy a new one or different model? Just taking a poll I guess.
I kind of read Walker1's reply before sending this. I agree. It was $499 4 years ago. If it were much over $100-$125, I'd be looking at the new ones. As I said, I love my saw, but I was always taught to buy something that your going to use, be it for a sport or hobby, that will help you grow. As long as it still works for you, keep it. But how long will it work? You're going to put money into something that will help you grow for another six months or have the chance to buy something that will grow with you for the next six years, what would you choose????
Good advice. I'm going to find out what it may cost to repair first but if its too much I'll buy the Bosch portable next time.
Thanks the the input all.
Just a follow up to this thread I started a while ago. I wound up getting the Bosch but am having a hell of a time getting the fence to be paralell to the blade.
Seems like no matter what I do, the rear part of the fence bumps in toward the blade and doesnt align properly.
Anyone with a Bosch have any tips or encounter this problem?
