Differecences between nova DVR and jet 1642-2 motors. Are both three phase?
Hello everybody, I’m in the process of buying a lathe. I narrow down to two choices: the NVA DRV and the Jet 1642-2. Both have 2HP at 230V but the NOVA is a direct drive which might have its advantages.
My question relates to the DVR motor itself. Is it a three phase motor like the Jet? Anybody knows which is the difference between the two motors. There is an electronic devise in both to control the speed so I wander if the DVR is really different.

They are not at all alike.
The Nova DVR has a very special motor/headstock where the shaft of the motor is the spindle. There is no belt/gear drive. From the Teknatool site: "By contrast, the unique Nova DVR integrates the motor and headstock; it has no drive pulleys. This makes for an extremely rigid spindle and very smooth, ..."
The Jet 1642-2 appears to be a more normal separate motor sparate head stock connected by pulleys situation. I once nearly bought a DVR, so studied it quite a bit. There is a relatively elegant university paper on the development of the DVR motor. To my knowledge, the motors ar not 3 phase unless their electronic control packages do converting. Neither requires 3 phase power form the user.

Thank you. I was just wondering if the actual motor was a three phase. The reason I'm asking is becouse I'm considering a lathe and norrow down to the Nova DVR and the Jet 1642-2. My concern with the Nova is the proprietay motor but a three phase motor is rather durable. The sofware is another thing altogether.
As to the reliability of the DVR, I have no knowledge. I was evaluating it about 3-4 years ago and actuaaly ordered one through a local Woodcraft store. However, Nova and Woodcraft were having "issues" according to the store manager. I gave up waiting 4 mo. and several missed deliveries. I cancelled and re-ordered a General International 16" lathe and have been very happy, even though it has a Reeves, non VFD drive system. I know that I can fix that after 20 years in my basement. That is my VFD concern:) Do a Nova DVR forum search on http://www.woodcentral.com (turning forum) and see if there has been any reliability issues. I know lots of folks love them.
