New guy here. Hi everyone.
I am making a veneered backgammon board for my granddaughter with different woods in it. I have purple heart, walnut and Anigre for the light areas.
The board will be housed in a solid cherry frame.
What would be a good way to finish this with this assortment of woods?

I've used shellac on purple heart, walnut and cherry with fine results. I don't know anigre. But purple heart can be porous. Shellac allows you to do a french polish with pumice, which fills the pores quite well. You don't have to go crazy and spend a week doing 20 coats -- 8 or 10 will work well. It's much less scary than I was led to believe. I'd try the blondest you can get, since you want to preserve the light/dark contrast of the woods.
Not sure how old your granddaughter is, but if there's a chance alcohol might be involved with backgammon, then you can do a final coat of varnish to protect the shellac alcohol.
At 11 years of age, I hope the only alchol involved will be my scotch.
Thanks for the info. Just recently restarted my wood butchering hobby so I will have to research french polishing.
