I need advice on spraying walnut. I cannot get consistent results when spraying walnut.
I almost always have some degree of orange peel despite checking viscosity, temperature, humidity and pressure. Furthermore I occasionally will get pin holing or bridging. I have been dealing with these problems for well over a year. I feel like I’ve tried everything.
Here are some specifics:
I’m using an Apollo 4 stage turbine with the Atomizer gun with a gravity cup and have used a 1.0 and 1.3 tip.
I normally sand to 220 grit then apply 1 to 2 hand applied coats of Target Ultraseal waterbase shellac sealer. Sand smooth with 400 then apply 3 spray coats of Target USL gloss. Viscosity is normally around 20-25 seconds
My finish coats are normally between 1-2 mill thick.
Temperature can range between 65-70 degrees and humidity is around 50%.
I have also used a Walcom Slim gun with gravity cup and 1.7 tip, same problems encountered but perhaps less orange peel.
Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. I can send pictures that illustrate exactly what I’m experiencing.
One last thing, what would you consider the easiest (idiot proof) finish to spray.
Thanks
Frank

Frank,
You're description of conditions etc. sound as ideal as you can get.
My gut feeling is the viscosity of the lacquer is a little thick. Someone else may tell you it's perfect. However if it's not working for you, I would start there. You may be spraying too wet a coat also.
Are you filling the pores of the walnut? I get the feeling you aren't.
Are you using the same companies thinner for your lacquer? I always use a total package when spraying lacquer. I don't combine products from different sources. It's just asking for trouble.
Pre Cat lacquers are as about as idiot proof as it gets. Sherwin Williams has a good one.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
Good luck.
Peter
