I have a 1x6x8ft piece of pine that i need to get 3 seperate pieces out of and which i will be jointing/planing to 3/4″
My question is where to start. Do i joint and plane the piece as a whole and then cut the pieces or do I rough cut the pieces to length and then joint and plane them all? Or doesnt it matter? I have a 6″ Jointer and a 13″ bench top planer and I’m concerned that it may be difficult to dimension an 8ft long board.
Thanks for your input.

Rough cut first
I recommend rough cutting first. The reason is that any defect in the board, such as twist, cup, etc., will require less removal of material the smaller the piece. For example, assume the board was uniformly cupped such that the cup in the middle was 3/8". If you flattened the whole board first, you will have to remove so much wood at the ends that you will no longer to get the 3/4" thickness you need at those points. By rough cutting the pieces, say into 4 equal length pieces, there will only be 5/64" cup in the middle of each.
The only addition I would add to your suggestions is to start by ripping off a piece that's 3" wide off his 96"L X 6"W X 1"T piece, then cut this into the right length plus a couple of inches to allow for snipe, and flatten one face and square both edges to the face of all the parts. Then rip off a piece from both edges at 13/16"+, and straighten and square the edge of the original pieces to the original wide face again. Lastly, finish ripping the pieces cut to 13/16"+ and run it all through a thicknesser to 3/4". Slainte.
