I have a technical
question about dining room tables.
I have what I think is described as a pedistal supported
dining room table. Two actually. Each pedistal has
three equally spaced legs.
The question is; which way should the leg that sticks
out, i.e. is aligned with the long dimension of the
table, be pointed? They can be mounted pointing outward
toward the chairs at the head and foot of the table or
inward toward the center of the table. Eathan Allen has
them pointed outward claiming anything that decorative
should be exposed to view. seems you could trip over
them if you get up quickly from the end of the table.
Also, the table is more stable if the pedistals are
mounted so that the two legs are at the end of the table
(pointing toward the outside corners of the table).
Several other ads in the paper have show them this way.
Sooo, Which way should they go? Is Eathan Allen wrong?

Don I built my dining room table with two columns but I used two feet instead of three the two columns are connected at the base by a center rail. If I would of have my time back I would of turned the feet so that they were facing 45 deg form the center line of the table instead of 90 deg and made them a little larger to keep with the columns proportions.

Scott, thanks for the response and pictures. Good looking table.
Thanks for the comments. I have since sold the table and been working on a set of plans for a new design that I will start next year.Scott C. Frankland

Don I just brought home mother-in-law's old mahogany dining room table that has two pedestals / three legs as you described. I had taken it apart without noticing which way the legs face. I pointed the odd legs inwards so they wouldn't protrude. Now I find that you can't scoot the two end chairs in very far without hitting the other two legs. So I don't know what's right, but you might want to check it with chairs in place.

Thats just about what happened to us. The floor refinishers took the table apart, and can' remember how it was. I checked furniture catalogs (as a woodworker, I keep as many as I can get on hand), and they all seem to point the odd leg toward the table ends. Don
