Dinner Table Sliding Expansion Mechanism
I have been looking for a book or plans for a round dinner table to which I can add one or two leaves, without luck. Can anyone point me to a source for such information – most importantly, the construction of the sliding mechanism for inserting the leaves. Thanks.

There is a very detailed discussion and description of how to build table extension slides in the July/August 1997 issue of Fine Woodworking. Go to this site to view the article: http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/ProjectsAndDesign/ProjectsAndDesignPDF.aspx?id=2160 I am currently building a table using these plans for the sliding mechanism- still in process.
Good woodworking!

I use wooden slides because they are the more 'hand made' look.
Here's a tip. Build the round table top and rough-out the shape and rough sand it. Turn it over and install the slides. Then turn it face up, add a small block of wood between the two halves in the center and use a router and a circle guide to cut the top to round. Then make the leaves and install them between the two half circles using alignment pins.
Then close it up and sand the top flush. Then trim the ends of the leaves to align with the half-rounds, and be precise with the placement of the pins so that you can use either one or two leaves and the alignment pins will always match.
I used the table slides from Paxton Hardware, here:

The last table I made of 6/4 antique southern pine was so heavy that I had to make a leg to support the top when it was extended. If you want a photo of that table email me privately and I'll sent it to you.
