I am thinking about buying a 12″ disc/ belt sander combo and was wondering about belt vs. direct drive. I know you can get slippage with a belt, but aren’t they easier to maintain?

I'd go with the belted model. If the motor dies you can replace it or you can change the speed if desired.
I think that slipping the belt is not an issue.

Any direct drive machine, if the motor goes, you get the pleasure of buying an entire new tool. Don't be fooled by any HP numbers stated on a direct-drive tool -- that's a common mistake.
