I picked up a used Disston #4 backsaw on Sunday with a 12″ blade…do not know the TPI yet. It cleaned up very nicely and saws beautifully. What confuses me is it says Toronto on the blade and not Philadelphia…
I did read the Disston site and googled on some others but can find nothing specific to Toronto. Can someone enlighten me? thanks

Must have been made in Toronto. Now go cut something with it.
Worry if it says China!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

I don't have a clue, but I have a theory. Could Disston have had a plant in Toronto or could they have bought components for a manufacturer there?
An example. Chevrolet Chevelle's in the late 60's and early 70's. Everyone knows what a 70 Chevelle is. If you happen to be traveling in Canada and you see that same Chevelle it will most likely have a grille emblem that says Beaumont. A Beaumont is a General Motors chevelle manufatured in their Canadian plant or for export to Canada.
Isn't there a web-site that dwells about old tools. I have seen people post about it, but can't remeber the site. They may have some Disston history there if that is what you seek.
Have a good evening...
sarge..jt
Sarge,
I did read the history of Disston on their website and no mention of Toronto. It's no big deal and, yes, apparently they did have a factory up there..just kinda strange no mention of it in the history. Actually, I posted the question because I wondered if it was labeled that way to maybe commemorate something, or produced up there..or what ever....anyhow, for $5 bucks I'm tickled pink...wherever it was made..
I assume this is the site you where looking on http://www.disstonianinstitute.com/
You say its etched Toronto on the blade ?Can you still make out the Etch on the saw blade?
The part that has Toronto on is it original " someone may have repaired it".
How old do you think it is? I know some saw makers when they bought out another saw maker they would use other makers parts until they were gone
Did Disston buy out another saw maker ? If so that's a old saw.
I wish I knew more about it all I know every time I try to buy a old dovetail saw in good shape they sell for what a Lie Nielsen sells for new
Oh this site you may have but might ask them about your saw http://www.vintagesaws.com/
How about posting a pic. We all love old tools

Ron,
I'd love to post a picture but I don't have a camera..(sigh!!) I did look at the vintage saw site as well as the Institute site. I suspect the saw is from the late 40's or 50's...the shape of the handle is not cute like the earlier back saws...I can't tell if the handle is apple or beech...just don't know those woods..
The etchings appear to be orginal ...and quite clear. Given it's age, if I'm correct, then why should the Toronto be a mystery...

Ron, the B4 on the above page is my saw..I think...not sure about the handle wood...and of course the Toronto thing...

Yes, Diston did have a plant in Toronto in order to avoid import tariffs. I believe it was closed in the 1920s.
