I’m about to finish a harvest table made from poplar and bass wood. I’d like to achieve a distressed look where a red tone shows through a worn black final color coat as I’ve seen on many Windsor style chairs. If you have advice or a link to a description for this finishing technique, I’d appreciate your help!
Thanks.

Our daughter and her husband have made furniture with a similar finish although not in two colors (just bare wood showing the "wear". They coated with paint and then sanded in places for the wear. You could do it similarly by coating with red (or perhaps a red stain), overpainting in black and then saning lightly. I have also seen a technique in which the first coat was put on and then vaseline applied where the "wear" is and then overcoating with the black. The paint, of course, won't adhere where the vaseline is. I think I would have a harder time with control on the latter method. An overcoat of thinned varnish or glaze would preserve the look.
