Hi,
As usual I need a little assistance. I am trying to make a set of divided light doors for a cabinet. I bought a router bit set, frued 99-283, but it looks like the muntins would have to be at least 1″ 3/8 wide so I could have a 1/4 divider for the glass to fit in. I am trying to keep the muntins as narrow as possible, 3/4-1″. Is the only option a set that requires a mortise and tenon. If so any pointers would be appreciated. As always THANKS.

Tom,
1-3/8" is the narrowest stock you should run with the 99-283 but the finished muntin is actually 1-1/8" wide (I have a door made with that size muntins if you would like to see a pic for reference). Divided lite bit sets are the best option since they have a smaller profile. Another other option would be to use a beading bit for the profile and rabbet bit or dado. There would be no easy way to make a coped joint but you could miter the profile at the junction of the rail and stile. Is there a reason you are not wanting the mortise and tenon?

Charles,
I was hoping you would jump in. I don't have any problem with the mortise and tenon other than than the fear of trying something new and looking for some thing easy. Can you recommend a set and any advice?
Thanks
Tom
The 99-270 is the set we offer. It is not particularly difficult to make the joints and no tools other than a table mounted router and a chisel are required. A drill press or mortise machine will make the process much faster, of course.

How deep , thick, would the muntin have to be? I am referencing a cabinet with 1" square muntins.
Thanks
Tom,They are ideal for 3/4" to 1" thick stock. Here are some images and dimensions that may help:

I am gearing up to make some storm windows with divided lights (which I have never done before). I actually looked at one of or the other of your sets at my local tool outlet (7 Corners). I opened the package while there to see what kind of instructions were included. They were, to say the least, skimpy, and actually encouraged the purchase of a particular book, which unfortunately is now OP. I would be happy to buy one of your sets, but do you have access to any instructions that will teach me how to use the bits -- either online, or otherwise? Thanks.********************************************************

nikkiwood,I'm racking my brain and can't recall any of our sets that would include a reference to a book. Anyway, we have always been an industrial supplier and as such have never been known in the past for offering great instructions. We are changing that by including detailed instructions and videos with many of our sets. If you tell me which item you are looking at I can likely get you the all information you will need.

Thanks mucho..............I will send you an email through Knots. You might want to handle it through Knots, since there might be others who are interested. I'll send the email nonetheless, and you can decide.********************************************************

I'll send the instructions form the stile and rail bit sets to the address you provided. If you can figure out which set you were looking at I can be sure that I've given you the correct info. Were the bits for regular cabinet doors? Glass cabinet doors? Window Sashes?

Right now, I am specifically looking at a bit set that would work for storm windows that would be made from 5/4 stock. However, about month or two down the line, I am slated to start on kitchen cabs where some of the 4/4 doors would have true divided lites. I have a local outfit that makes up doors, but I would like to do them myself. Thanks again for your help.********************************************************

Did you look at the 99-270 set that I posted the pics to in the earlier post? If you think you might want to cover both applications with one bit set I believe that's the best way.
