I’ve started making some basic wooden toys for my children after realizing how expensive some of these baby toys were being sold for. Now their process is a closely guarded secret and I don’t think anyone call tell me exactly what they do but I’m looking for advice on how to properly seal these wooden baby toys for my littles. I have a son who is basically 3 and the idea of putting dhis mouth on every new thing he sees has mostly disappeared however I have an 8 month old daughter who has just now entered this stage of her life and if she can grab it she is going to gum it. I have used natural wood that was unfinished and then used non toxic baby safe liquid food colours to colour them. The issue is that my son will play with them just fine and he doesn’t get any colour transference but my daughter gums on it for a second and then her mouth is purple. I just need something that will hold the colour in and make it safe for her to handle and slobber on.
attached picture of the few blocks I have already colored in prep for a sealant. They are 2x2in and my son loves them even now but I didn’t want to waste time making all the remaining colours just to find out my daughter could never use them. At least not for a couple of years.
Thank you so much. I Am absolutely new to this whole process and googling everything I can and I am hoping someone knows an answer for me on there. Thank you. Sorry if I didn’t put something in a proper format.
I guess I should add that I’m looking for a very matte finish. Grimms toys are almost like a little velvety. Try stacking blocks that are super shiny and slick and it doesn’t go so well which is what had brought me here to this board to ask. I’ve found lots of resources to make them shiny and sleek but that is just not what I need for these blocks. Need them water safe and slobber safe and then not shiny or slippery at all.

I'd use a water based poly. Once cured it is safe.
