DJ 20 or 8″ professional jointer
I thought I was all set on buying a Delta DJ 20 8″ jointer but I see they have a new 8″ professional model that looks pretty good for about $400.00 less. Does anyone have some info on the new machine? Why the price difference?

The DJ20 is more a professional machine with the parallelogram type tables. The professional model is more the homeshop model.
The "professional" model (not DJ20) does have paralellogram tables like the DJ20. I bought one last fall and it works well. It has beefy castings and long infeed and outfeed tables.I have used the DJ20 in the past, and I don't see a much difference. Perhaps one is made in tiawan, and the other in the US?
I own the DJ-20 and was surprised to see it is actually made in Taiwan. The base is made in USA.
When I was considering an 8" jointer last spring, I was leaning towards the "professional" model simply because I seldom adjust my jointer for anything other than a very thin perpendicular cut, and knew I would never wear out the professional model, much less the DJ-20.
YORGII... The DJ20 has the parllelogram tables and the profesional model has dovetailed ways. Parallelgram set up is more expensive to make hence the higher price but it is superior to dovetail ways in that it is adjustable. If the table warps on a dovetail ways jointer the entire jointer must be placer on a grinder to resurface or sometines it can be shimmed. Parallelogram can be adjusted at the four corners of each table. I repair machines and there is a big difference in the two machines in quality.
Or you could purchase the Grizzly G1018 which is known to be a good machine. Which has excelled in both industry & home shops. Yes it's a basic 8" jointer. but for a home shop if that is what you have it will do everything you need as it will also do for a commercial shop. Buy this one & then go out & buy some more equipment so you can fully equip the shop of your dreams.
Its marketing, Delta is trying to hit the Home Depot market and is selling what they say is a professional model at upper HD prices. If you want a good piece of Delta equipment by used old stuff. The new stuff is crap and so is their support.
