DMT Dia-Sharp Stones – Initial Use Prep?
I recently got a set of the Dia-Sharp stones – have used other DMT products but not these. Do the surfaces need any kind of “prep” – or are they “ready to go” no/zero problems? Reason for question is that I’ve used Trend diamond stones and on the 300 grit in particular I have to go over the surface prior to initial use to remove loose/high diamond particles – I usually do this by lightly rubbing with an old card scraper. Have had to do this a little on some of the DMT DuoSharp stones as well. Any experience/feedback appreciated.

I think it's probably smart to start on something not critical, like a wide plane iron's primary bevel and see how the scratch patterns turn out, before you start to "trust" them on secondaries.
I just started using mine. I also use car window cleaner fluid (per Paul Sellers technique). I was also ignorant that I might have needed to do anything special to use them. Everything seemed to work fine. I've been using mine now for 4 or so years and have been happy with them.
Thank you both for feedback.
My newer (6 years ago or there-abouts) DiaSharp stones in Extra Fine and Extra-Extra Fine had noticeable anomalies. I contacted DMT and was instructed to rub the XXF and the XF face to face 2 or 3 times. If that did not clear the issue they would replace.
It cleared the issue and I have been using them ever since. I have used DMT 'stones' since about 2002. they are by far the longest lasting diamond plates I have ever used. All my trend and EZ Lap products have worn to the point of unusable and been replaced with DMT. My DMT DiaSharp 'Fine' stone is still in use over 18 years later.
I do all of my sharpening on the DiaSharp plates, and finish on an ultrafine ceramic. I use them all dry.
I had no trouble using them out of the box. If there were any anomalies, they wore off pretty quick. On the coarser stones ot wouldn't have mattered anyway, since they were never going to touch the final edge.
Thanks again all
