I just got off the phone. Was ringing around trying to find shellac and carnauba wax. Nope. I live near a city, no luck. Had to phone a place I used to deal with several hundred miles and a stretch of water away to get any.
Do any of you have problems with this?, what do you pay?
The shellac I can get is as far as I know the
i only
grade I can get.
I have been quoted $29.90 for 500 grams of shellac, and $7.95 for 100 grams of 50/50 mix of carnauba/beeswax. Bearing in mind these are New Zealand $$$, American money would be just under 1/2 that. ( our exchange rate is currently appalling ). would it be better for me to get the stuff from the States?
Thanks heaps.

Here (here be Dallas, Texas), you have to go to a "woodworker's only" store to buy shellac flakes. The store I haunt is called Woodcraft, where a pound (guess that is a little less than 500 grams?) runs between $20 and $31. Woodcraft is not generally known for bargain prices. I see that Wood Finish Supply (http://www.woodfinishsupply.com/ShellacPricing800.html , I haven't dealt with these people but they come well recommended) is selling on-line for between $11 and $16 a pound. If I were you, I would be concerned with how long it would take to get.
For the wax, I generally just use "furniture wax", which doesn't have a specific assay.

*Thanks Dave.As far as I know 500 grams is a pound ( near enough ), your price seems higher than I thought it would be, considering the size of the market etc. In our $$ that is about $45-$70. add freight and so on........Between $11 and $16 per pound is about what I was quoted, which all considered is not so bad. What you should do is get it from here! heehee.regards AJ
*Liberon/Star Finishing Supplies in Fort Bragg, California.
*Thanks CSDo those people have a web site? I will have a look anyway but I might be wasting my time if they dont.
*AJ, the link that I punted in my post is Liberon/Star. Let's see if it works this time:http://www.woodfinishsupply.com/ShellacPricing800.html Dave
*They're unbeatable. The service is personal and absolutely excellent.
*AJI remember getting some carnauba wax from Teknatool in Henderson, Auckland (the lathe manufacturers) one time when I was in NZ - you might try them.Shellac available from Mother of Pearl & sons Tdg, Sydney,in at least 3 grades. The $AU:$NZ exchange rate might not cripple you as much as the $US.Good luckDon
*Dave, thanks for the link.Don, I will definately give Auckland a call for that. And your correct, the Aussie/NZ exchange rate is a i wholelot better than the US one.
