I am considering installing a radiant heater in my shop. I have 8″ ceilings and wonder if when you are directly under them you develop a hot head. I plan to put a 20′ long 40,000 BTU heater down the middle of a 24′ x 32′ shop, will this be OK?
Life is what happens to you when you’re making other plans .

If you only have 8 inch high ceilings it probably will get pretty warm.... ;-)
Seriously, check the specs before you buy. Many if not most radiant heaters are designed for higher ceilings, like 10 or 12 feet or more. I've seen a few designed specifically for home or garage use but they still require at least 8 1/2 feet, I believe.
Jerry, Radiant heaters do not heat the air in a building, They warm any surface in their radiant path. Yes, if you stand in the radiant path, the top of your head will get warm. Remember, there are three basic types of heat transfer ie. conduction, convection and radiation. For a shop that is used part time you might consider a gas fired unit heater with a thermostatic control. PS don't forget insulation and weather stripping.

I have a 40' radiant tube heater running down the center of my shop. I shopped long and hard, and discovered that none of the mfg.'s would ok any ceiling height that low. I have a 12' ceiling, and was turned down by several. You are asking for trouble installing a heater that low. It will need to be at least 6" to 8" below the ceiling height, with a top reflector. That puts you with a heating tube at about 7' off the floor, and they get HOT! You need to consider other options, as you are just asking for trouble with this application.

There are probably others to choose from, but here's one radiant heater that may fit your needs: http://www.easyradiantworks.com/ezdoz.htm As mentioned above, make sure the ceiling height requirements are met - this one is supposed to work with 8' ceilings.
