Ron, could you e-mail with more information on the bench. I,m a full time woodworker and used to live in the Cleveland area my family is still their. An antique workbench built in ohio would be a welcomed addition to my shop.

Ron,
At the WW show last weekend in Springfield, MA Lee Neilson had several antique benches for sale at reasonable prices. I asked if they had scoured the Maine backwood gathering up the workbenches...they said actually some were from Ohio.
I checked out the bench and even bid on it, but it went too high. Subsequently there was another one on ebay and I got it! It was made by C. Christiansen of Chicago, IL (manufacturers of workbenches and hand screws) I am trying to find out how old this bench is. Does anybody know of this company? Or how I can find out more about this bench. Here it is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3269565099&category=4123&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWN%3AIT&rd=1
Thanks
don't know anything about the company, but there were quite a few of this style benches made in the late 1800's - - I might guess yours is one of the earlier ones from the wooden screws - many had metal
nice score, congratulations, you'll enjoy your new tool - - post a pict for us when you get it cleaned up
Looks like a great bench - I bet it is antique- I bet you would like to get a hold of the fool that got paint all over it.
I bet it will look good when its refinished- what do you plan on doing to it?
Ron
I am trying to find out how old the bench is by finding out somthing about the company that made it. There is a tag tacked to the underside that says "C. Christiansen" "Chicago, ILL" "manufacturers of Work Benches and Hand Screws" and under that it says "Benches for Manual Training" I think it was made for schools or something similar. The vises have wooden screws 2-1/4 in diameter and both still work good. The metal plate that acts as a garter has "Christiansen Chicago ILL" in relief on them. The bench is slightly damaged with some glue joints that have let go - especially in the tail vise. There are also a couple of pieces of wood missing underneath. The row of dog holes in the tail vise is missing the support board underneath. I do not want to ruin the value of this bench by doing the wrong things to it, but I do want to repair it and clean it up. It could be easily made fully functional. I need some help in determining what kind of wood it is made of. Does anybody have any suggestions about this?
I will include some pictures as I go along.
Here is a picture of the tag on the underside and one of the tail vise with the missing board under the dog holes.
