Does anyone have any experience with hardwooddowel.com?
I’m looking to score some larger (hopefully 2″) black walnut dowel. Online, I’m not seeing a lot of resources. The one shop I’ve heard of and respect is, well, pretty salty, I presume as it would be a custom order for them.
I’m only in need of 4-6 feet in length.
I did find product available online at hardwooddowel.com. The price is pretty reasonable, but it appears the only way to pay online is via PayPal. And, of course, it’s not a super-professional looking website. I realize that means nothing, but …
Does anyone have any experience dealing with them. They’re out of Riverdale, New Jersey.
Thanks!

For something that diameter, my first choice would be to turn it on a lathe. Next option would be handplane a 2" square blank down to round. Or make an octagon on a tablesaw, then plane off the corners till round.
John, The dowel’s going to end up in the lathe eventually (but I am darned rusty there) as I’m going to end up tapering them anyway. I’ve no idea why I didn’t think about gluing up stock...
Now that you mention it, I may have enough 8/4 laying around here somewhere I’ve been hanging onto for 30 years that was intended for a gunstock I was going to make. Heck, I sold the lock n barrel years ago.
Thanks for jogging an old man’s memory. Now I just have to find it. If not, well, a glue up would be much less expensive. Jesh.
John,
Your smack upside my head got to bugging me... and jogged my memory where that walnut might be hiding.
Bothered me so much I just went out to the wood shop and found it right where I put it all those years ago. And, I’m shocked. I didn't recall it’s actually a stick 12/4... maybe 6 inches wide and 6’ long. I didn’t dig it out tonight, but the butt end I can see sure looks like it’s quartersawn.
Tomorrow morning will involve retrieving it from my (very disorganized) storage. A 20x better deal than buying something sight unseen. It was a barn loft storage find sometime before 1985, and old man who gave it to me back then was well into his 80s and said he’d had it for years... cut off his farm in SE Ohio.
If you’re ever in NW Ohio, I’ll buy you a beverage. Have a great evening. Felling like I hit the lottery.
Nice! Shopping in your own shed! I'll bet you find something else while you're pulling out that walnut.
