Greetings
I want to make a cedar hope chest, but I hate the look of an all-cedar chest, and working with cedar. I don’t want to use cedar lining because of the impact on wieght and interior space. I am thinking of a frame-and-panel design, similar to what is in a link in the thread below, but using a different wood for the frames, and cedar for the panels and bottom of the chest. Cherry comes to mind because of the red tones comlimenting the red of the cedar. I would be interested in any other suggestions or ideas on appropriate wood to use.
Thanks
Stan

I've used clear poly on Aromatic Cedar and it's really, really red. I'd consider pairing it with Maple..for a pretty modern contrasty look or maybe really, really dark Walnut..for a richer old-world look.
First, buy a tiny bit of several woods and sand and finish as you would a project..go ALL the way through the finishing schedule and then compare and contrast..you might discover something and teach ALL of us a thing or two.
Don't be afraid to experiment before you start the project.

I made a 'cedar' chest of solid Cherry and lined it with 1/8" thick aromatic cedar strips on the inside. I use my bandsaw to resaw the strips then my overhead sander to sand them to final thickness. The weight added by the cedar was neglible. The strips were installed by using 1/2" brad nails.

Thanks Larry and Planewood. I hadn't thought about making a very thin layer of cedar for the lining. I had not considered either maple or walnut with cedar, but you're right, if its going to contrast, it might as well be a strong contrast.

Please be sure to post pictures of the end result...or the in-process pictures!
