I made a wardrobe.
Great, finished off well, polished, and lugged to the top of the stairs……..
Couldn’t get it into the room….tooooooooo big..sawed feet off….still too big……
Wife still splitting her sides three months later, I am the joke at dinners, the school run, church sermons etc…..
I Sold IT!!!!….back in profit…..
But never defeated……..Has anyone ever used Cam dowels and locks?
Are they ok for furniture which needs to be dismantled?
Should I make a jig to drill the holes or can I buy one????

Dear Strongbow,
All of the antique wardrobes I have seen are in at least two pieces and now I know why. Sorry you had to be the one to educate all of use on preplanning. I did have to one time put a display cabinet through the window because i't was too big to make sharp turns in the hall to the bedroom. Wardrobes have a base which has a drawer unit,the middle unit has the closet section and the top has the bonnet, the crown molding, If you wanting to build another do it like the antique ones that set on each other, no need to lock together because the weight alone will keep it in place.

I sympathize with you ... I was once the only bidder ($200) on a Wooten desk in an old courthouse cleanout sale (1966) .... 2nd floor. At the fall of the hammer, as I gave them my number, they laughed as they reminded me that I had 48 hours to get it out of the building and there were no doors to stairs or elevator or any other exit that would allow it to pass, even with the front files removed! With permission, the next day, I had the window glass removed from the office, and seven strong men lifted it out onto a rented bricklayers scaffold (3 high), then two high, then one high, then onto my waiting truck. The glass was replaced and I paid everyone, and drove away. (total spent $450)
I never got home with it ...... after I returned the rented scaffold and headed for home, a guy flagged me down two blocks from home, offered me $4000 for it and I drove to his home, where his friends unloaded it into his four-car garage, and he paid me in cash. Once in a lifetime ...

Don't feel bad, Strongbow. I worked on an architect designed building years ago. This was an assisted living facility and the second floor bed room areas were left as wide open rooms. The archy designed some large wardrobes that could be positioned to create individual spaces. When they showed up on the job site, they wouldn't even fit through the door let alone make it up the stairs. There were 20 units.
I bet there are a few basements around the country that have some real pretty boats in them!
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match

Yes, I remember my father and Uncle were talking about one that was built in the basement and stayed down there forever but I can't remember who it was.
I build two wardrobes, one almost missed the top door jam by an eight of an inch. I build a longer one but I had to make it in four parts so I could get it into the bedroom easy. Everyone wondered at first at how I got it in that room.
Been there!! Years ago, I built a corner cabinet for a lady who lived in an old house, small door ways, tight staircase, etc. Got it built, got it up stairs (barely) and it wouldn't fit through the door!!!! Back down the stairs, back to the shop, hacked the back off, repeat.
That's a mistake you only make once. What a nightmare!!!

All: This thread kinda reminds me of the old Abbot and Costello routene where they are out selling vacuums. They knock on door, lady of the house lets them in and they start talking up the vaccum, she tells them over and over she's not interested. Costello finally dumps out the dirt container to show the lady how well their vac works when she tells them the reason she is not interested: no electricity!

Ha! Ha! Sometimes I feel like Curly from the Three Stooges trying to deliver the block of ice up that long set of steps, every time he reaches the top all he's left with is an ice cube! Gotta laugh at yourself, or you'll go crazy.........

Isn't there supposed to be a complete glider inside one of the attics at Colditz Castle in Germany - built by PoWs?
On a more serious note Hafele make a number bof systems such as the Minifix and can supply drilling jigs for the same

Not to brag, but here is my experience....
When I built my son's crib, I made it fancy, and BIG. Never thought about how to move it, so my desing was not knock-down.
As I was assembling it, my girlfriend asked how easy it would be to bring it to the second floor.
So we measured....
1-It didn't fit through the bedroom door;
2-Couldn't pass in the staircase;
3-Impossible to fit it through the house door;
4-I could not even take it out of the shop!!!!
So the father suggested the baby would sleep beside the workbench. The mother thought the original desing had to be reviewed.
Guess who won.
You mean ya didn't think about moving (into the shop)?
Scrit
good idea, i am glad you won and are you teaching your child the joys of woodworking?

Reminds me of this perfectionist friend I had who also had a short temper. He made a gun cabinet with sliding glass doors. It was wall mounted so the long guns were horizontally mounted inside........or should I say they were INTENDED to be horizontally mounted inside. The sliding glass doors wouldnt open enough for the guns to fit in. So.........he smashed the whole project to splinters.
