Well, I just had an experience (or lesson) that hopefully will help someone down the road. I bought a 2hp DC (SEEKO) back in 1990. It is the two bag system common today, and performed well over the years. It never did list the particle size that it allowed to pass through the bag. At some point over the years, a mouse decided that the bag material would make good nest building material. Needless to say, the two holes became an issue. I priced replacement bags, but the cost was too high (I thought). I patched it with duct tape (doesn’t it fix everything?). This week-end I was cutting some red oak and cherry on the TS and thought it looked foggy in the shop. I stopped and looked around and the tape had blown off and the DC and a two inch stream of dust was spewing into the air. I stopped and left the shop for a while and let things calm down. I woke up the next day with a horrible sinus headache and congestion and sneezing saw dust. Learned my lesson and called and ordered a 1 micron cartridge type replacement with a lower plastic bag. it’s 200 bucks, but the lungs are worth it.

I came across this link recently searching for DC info:

I'm feeling better and better about deciding to locate my DC outdoors.
I would locate mine outside the shop if I could. No way to protect it from the elements. Definately put it outside if you can.
Good move, bones, glad to hear it. The problem with our dust is that it's the stuff you can't see that does the most damage as it accumulates in our lungs, never again to see the light of day.
I'm gnawing on this idea of sitchee-ating the DC outside. I was milling cedar yesterday, and my Jet canister was sucking it up for all it was worth, but I could still smell the cedar in the shop.

I hear ya. I also have an air filtration system. They two combined (DC & Air cleaner) do a good job, but the noise is bothersome. I have been thinking about framing in a corner and putting the DC in a closet like structure, and venting it to the outside. For now I have to pay off the filters.

Instead of paying 200 for a new filter bag go to http://www.wynnenv.com. There they sell aftermarket cannister fillters which do a much better job of getting all the fine dust. And at only $90 they cost less to.

I would like to use a mask over my nose to filter the dust, especially when cleaning out the dust collector! I wear glasses. I haven't yet found a refillable type that fits me & the glasses. Disposable filters fog my glasses badly on occasion, but that is what I use when needed. Also, it is just a hobby, so I don't want to spend a fortune on the mask & I don't want a heavtweight one. Is there a four-eyes out there who can make a recommendation?Cadiddlehopper
ya I wear glasses too, I pick up a 1/2 face mask from Woodcraft with replaceable carrtridges. It's a toxic dust mask. http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=3705 Item B.
