I have a job to build 21 interior cherry doors, 36″ x 80″. These will be ten panels, with 4-1/2 rails and stiles. The customer wants simple panels. I was going to use 3/8″ cherry ply panels which the customer approves. The question is whether I can firmlyl glue the ply in place or would have to let them float.
Any comments would be appreciated, Thanks, Jim

You can glue the panels. If you do, the doors will be stronger and more rigid. However, if your joinery of stiles and rails is already fully sound then there isn't much point in more strength, so just tack with a spot of glue or use space balls or the like to keep them from rattling around.
4 1/2" rails and stiles are going to move. If you glue the panels either the glue joint will break or the wood will.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
If you are using proper kiln dried material at 6%-8%, then the wood will only increase slightly in dimension with time (as it reaches EMC), then 'shrink' back less than half that - if you are in the US. It is all about EMC. At 4-1/2", the movement will be negligible. So you can elect to glue or not. More important is to make the panel and plow fit snugly, with slightly eased edges on the plow. This will make for a tight assembly, with no rattles or moving parts.

Thanks Dave. Your comment was pretty much what I figured but I wasn't really sure. Not much scrap value to popped doors. (I'm in Missouri wherre we enjoy $2 KD cherry) Thanks again, jim
