Hello all – I have a question.
My front entry consists of a steel double door. Because of the house design and soil conditions, the door racks seasonally.
Here’s what happens: the floorplan of the house looks like the letter H with the front entry located in the thin horizontal part of the “H”. The home is in Dallas, TX where most of the soil is expansive clay. This clay shrinks as it dries and swells as it gets wet. (That’s why we water our foundations) As the seasons change, one side of the house rises (or settles) relative to the other side, racking the door in the process.
Question: does anyone know if some kind of hardware exists that would allow for periodic jamb adjustments within the rough opening? I’m thinking of something that would replace shims and be permanently installed, but allow for adjustment.
Regards,

I don't know, but if you post this on Breaktime, you'll be more likely to get some better informed opinions.
I do know. I don't know what the trade name is off the top of my head, but go to a lumberyard, yeah, a real one not a box, and look for a line of fasteners made by GRK. They're typically bronze and have star drives and self cutting threads. On an aside, they're great screws for a variety of different uses. Their trim screws are the bomb. But back to your case, they make a two part screw. The top 3/4" or so threads into the jamb and remains a permanant fixture. you can cover it with a plastic cap (not so great) or leave it (even more not so great). The shank spins freely but is captive to the head, and is threaded like any other screw. Insert the whole thing in your jambs, top, middle, and bottom, and the middle shank you use to tighten or loosen. Now you can 'fudge' things in or out with the seasons. Downside, you're going to reset your doors and get rid of the shims so you can move things. You'll likely only have a consistant reveal half the year. I haven't tried them, I don't know if I trust them, but they're out there and marketed pretty specifically to people in your shoes.
