I intend to dove tail 1 X5X 84board to a 1X5x40 board. What would the best jig for this purpose since the boards are too long to stand vertically in a jig? The thickness is a true 1 inch. Thank you, Smuggler

Unfortunately, you are way outside the range of any jig. Soo, the jig is up and you will have hand dovetail the two together. Actually dovetailing large pieces together is quite easy and a great place to start if you have never hand dovetailed before. This is because layout lines can be very visible and it is easy to see if you are straight and square. Very small thin stock is a bad place to start learning the craft. You can also do half blinds if you want to conceal the joint from one edge. I still think the best treatise on hand dovetailing is Tage Freid Teaches Woodworking by Taunton Press. There are step by step instructions for each of the three kinds of dovetails--through, half blind and full blind. They are really photo essays and very easy to follow.
My past apprentice, Shawn Cummings, did a Japanese influenced TV Stand from 8/4 boards that planed to about 1-7/8" by about 18" wide. It took him about two days to knock the thing together but it looked quite nice when he was done. I suggest doing a sample in some scrap before tackling the real thing.
With best regards,
Ernie Conover
