Has anyone used the Veritas dovetail jig for hand cutting dovetails – – and if so – – what’s your take on the jig??

Willyeh,
I was fascinated with the concept so I made a couple of jigs from oak and bought a japanese saw (tiger). The Veritas has a magnet (I think) and I did not incorporate that feature in mine. After a bit of playing around I put it in the drawer and bought a LN dovetail saw.
It should work. The problem is sawing straight is an important part butchering wood....I bought Ian Kirby's book and have never regretted it.

HAY I'll take it! LOL..
I have several japanese saws and I like them ALOT!
I have a cheep one and works as well as the ones I got for much more money???
Geeee.. Am I missing something???
I have one. I know a lot of people will consider it cheating and berate you for not just committing yourself to practicing until you can make your own freehand dovetails. Personally, I do both. I also like clever gadgets. The Veritas jog definitely is one. It works very well and allows you to take one aspect of where dovetails can go wrong - sawing straight and true to angled line after angeled line across a width - out of the equation.
My dovetailing is kind of like my golf game: I'm a bit of hacker because I just don't have the time or opportunity to do it enough. I enjoy making well fitted ones freehand, but so far, I'm not feeling like trusting any very visible dovetail joint on a piece made out of expensive hardwood stock to my okay, but too often not perfect freehand efforts. I like the crutch of the Veritas jig. It's certainly no more of a crutch than using a Leigh router jig, a band saw, or a tablesaw to cut dovetails.
All in all, it is clever, well made, and easy to use. I recommend it.

I can make a 'fair' set of dovetails.. Not bad BUT not as good as my router and Incra fence allows..
I don't think it is cheating if the work is GOOD when ya' finished!
