Dovetails
My first question is what are you trying to accomplish with it? If you are going to produce hand made furniture why would you want to use a jig? For the time you would need to master the Leigh, not to mention the expense, you could gain the shills to hand cut your dovetails.
With that being said, if you are doing production work a jig would be in order. The Leigh and similar jigs are more versatile but the price you pay is a bit more setup time. If you are doing thru dovetails a Keller is very efficient. I'll leave it to the jig Guru's to expand on the relative merits of the various devices.
Bottom line: Hand cutting them is a fairly easy skill to master, contrary to the marketing propaganda of the manufacturers. It is also more efficient in many cases and unarguably more satisfying.
Regards
Rob
i like the omnijig 7116 as it is quick and solid. the newer models do more but I find I want to get the benefit of a dovetail with the speed of this unit rather than time consuming dovetails that slow me down too much with set ups. My relative bought the Leigh for small boxes, but he quit making them because of the time involved in using the unit versus the money he could charge for the boxes.
