I am now using a 30 year old craftsman dovetail template along with a Hitachi TR-12 Router mounted dovetail bit and a Porter Cable template guide. Needless to say the joints that I am getting are more and more toward the sloppy side. Therefore I am asking for some advice on what you might recommend. Is it perhaps the age of the Craftsman Template, the combination of the brands or operator setup?

It is possible that the template has somehow gotten worn over the years, but most likely it is the operator setup.
First, check the depth of cut of the dovetail bit. If it is too deep, the joint will be sloppy. While you're checking, also make sure the template guide is held firmly in the router, and does not move while you're cutting.
Second, do not rotate the router as you cut the joint. On many routers, the template guide is not concentric with the bit. If you rotate the router while you're cutting, you get sloppy joints.
I think that that part of the problem is the difficulty in the height setting of the TR-12 as opposed to a PC-690. While I try not to rotate the router when making the initial right to left cut or the left to right full depth cuts and the right to left clean out cuts I will watch it.
I keep checking both the dovetail bit and the PC template guide for any movement/laack of tightness.

I have a Keller Dove Tail jig this and may not help you.
I can adjust how tight the fits is moving the fence that the stock fits against-like the side I cut the pins ,deeper in the templet the tighter the fit ? not sure would have to look at the jig.

Jamie--I went back to a 20 year old router with a new 2 flute dovetail bit and----after just 2 to 3 setups the dovetail joints worked like a champ! I think that most of the problem was with the Hitachi TE-12 (plunge)!!! as I didn't change anythng else.
Thanks BP
BP,
I'm curious as to your definition of 'sloppy'....were they nice and tight and now too loose?....is there a gap between the two boards?....are the sides flush when assembled?
