I saw this thread in a Machinists Forum, and thought the general woodworm population out there should see it too.
“I have been cutting a lot of dovetails in alum. lately. Today I started to think about it and the question came up in my tiny brain, Why do I always cut the female first, no not my wife. I do this because this is the way I have always done it. I think I picked up this habit from working in wood. Just curious assuming you have to make both m&f which do you do first. I am cutting on a manual machine (note I am looking for another knee mill in Las Vegas”
So what’s new then? Where on earth do these metalheads get these strange habits?

philip,
as i am a mere follower of those who have taught me the how-tos of life, in this case mr. frid, i cuts the males, as in pins, first. and i sort of identify with you on this point in that lately, for some reason, i have begun to question why this is so. the answer, thus far, is blocked as i cannot see beyond the questioning of this as yet another excuse, on my part, to find an easier "method" for getting them cut perfectly. so for me tis pins first till i know i have mastered it.
