Can i get some quick feedback on whether I’m building these drawer boxes the right size for a given face frame opening and slide hardware? The reason i’m asking is i’ve built one and installed it and it seemed to fit fine but the slides seem to resist more than i’d expect and i’m not sure if it’s normal for these slides or if i’m build the box a little too big
face frame opening size = 5″ x 16″
Box front size = 4 7/16″ x 14 7/8″
The slides say i need 1/2″ on each side, so i cut the width 1″ + 1/8 and it really doesn’t say anything about height but i figured 1/4″ above and below would be fine so i took off 1/2 + 1/16 (don’t ask me why the 1/16…just seemed like a good idea).
I joining all this with half blind dovetails (my first) and all that’s turning out good thanks to the new PC jig.
Anyway…do these dimensions look about right? How much clearance is customary? BTW the drawer fronts will be full overlapped so these are not inset / flush mounted doors.
Here’s a link to a slide similar to the one i’m using

Thanks in advance!

BobC ,
IMO you should only deduct 1-1/16th overall at the most in width , even slightly less for that particular slide . The slides are of good quality , but not very forgiving and a bit tight to begin with. Try one at just barely over an inch shy .
good luck dusty
yeah, for draw slides I use minus 1" width +/- 1/32".
Sounds like the draw is too narrow, creating tension. Shim with washers to correct.
wow...and here i thought i needed to make them a little narrower. OK i'll so that...it's easier to add a little width than take it off.
Thanks and ton.
Sounds like the draw is too narrow, creating tension. Shim with washers to correct.I agree for what that is worth.. I made a Horizontal router table (X/Y/Z) using full length 24" slides of a 'Good Quality'.. There is NO measurable movement in the slides.. Well, worth measuring for wood working...Drawers can be hard to fit.. Especially if ya get old like me...
for future reference machine up a piece of 1" timber (exactly 1") then use this as the dimension check for your drawer front and back. once the drawer is sanded you will have a slight clearance.
thanks razor
