I have been setting up a new shop and making a series of utilitarian drawers. I have been using a lock joint in 1/2″ baltic birch for the sides but find the chip out irritating. Can you make a decent drawer side with MDF?

yes indeed. It will not chip out if the table and stock are stable with minimal vibration.
thanks for the advice. how far up from the bottom of the side would you set the dado for the drawer bottom if it is to carry less than 50 lbs per drawer?
1/2" is a good rule of thumb for all drawers.
wood masher ,
Determine the type of drawer slides you will be using first off .
Plan on where you will mount the slides on the drawer box , make sure the slot is not in the path of mounting holes .
