I’m consructing a small “built in” in a hallway alcove that will serve as a chest of drawers for my wife. She wants the bottom two drawers to extend the width of the piece whcih will be just at 40 inches. The depth will be just at 151/2″. I intend to use mechanical gliders. My concern is racking with the shallow depth (Andy Rae’s book)! Do you think it will be okay since I am using glides? Do you recommend a specific glide in this case? Do you have any ideas to add in addition to the glides for stability? Thanks, Michael

Michael,
Sorry this message got missed.
That is one long drawer and you're right to be concerned about racking issues. I'd go with an undermount Accuride drawer glide. This way you keep the glides closer together than ones mounted on the drawer sides. This should work fine. Best of luck. Gary
Michael,
I'd go with 150-pound capacity, side mount slides and a standard 100-pound slide mounted under and in the center of the drawer bottom. This'll provide the weight carrying capacity the drawer may be subjected to, and the slide in the center will prevent the drawer from wracking. Of course, all slides need to be the same length and travel. We've done this successfully on 53-in-wide drawers - the widest so far.

Actually, I considered so doing with the exception of my making a center wood glide. My drawer is full extension. Can I get a full extension under(center mount) glide? thanks,
Michael
Yes, although I'd use a side mount, full extension slide and just mount it on the cabinet's bottom shelf. If your drawer bottom is recessed from the bottom edges of the front, back and sides, then you'll have add a filler to the drawer bottom.Gary W
