Hi Everybody–
This is my first post–I’ve been lurking for a while and really enjoying the forum, so my thanks to all.
My question is about the Lee Valley Drawer Lock router bit. It came with no instructions, and I’m having a very tough time getting a good joint. Anyone have any experience with this bit? I’ve tried all sorts of heights and fence settings, to no avail.

The CMT website has instructions with many of the bits it sells. The lock miter info can be seen here. I printed the stuff out and keep a copy with my router supplies. Some good info!

Hi Ben... Here is a link to a very helpful "step by step" article on using a drawer lock bit. Hope I'm not stepping on any toes. I don't know why the bits don't come with any set-up tips, not very brotherly in my opinion! If I remember correctly the CMT site has two diagrams outlining the concept but nothing more. The link I am giving you is very detailed. Good luck!

Also have a look at the site by John Lucas...Woodshop Demos. I know he has an article on setting up the 45 degree locking bit which helped me out, not to mention lots of othere great ideas and techniques. He very well may have one for drawer lock bits.

Hey, stevemac-
Nice catch! I had forgotten about that American Woodworker article. It is indeed a good demonstration of the use of the bit.

Thanks everybody! That's a big help.

I have the instructions for the Lee Valley bit, let me know if you still need a copy.
I'd love a copy of the instructions. Lee Valley said they didn't have any, and they referred me to a few web sites, though none of them cover the Lee Valley bit, which is different from the other drawer lock bits I've seen.
So, thanks. I'd love a copy.

Let's try this again ... a.k.a. message 10.
After a bit (pun intended) of work, I was finally able to copy the information onto this computer (work computer is not connected to internet and has minimal programs).
Hopefully the file can be read ... if not, then please let me know and I'll try again ... even if it comes to snail mail!
Cheers, Todd

After reading your post, I went to the Lee Valley Tool web site and located the tool. They have their instructions here:

Thank you for the legal advice. I have removed the direct evidence of my violation. Besides, the Lee Valley link provided by Todd yields a much better print of the instructions.

Ben, I checked the Woodshop Demos site, and there is a great page of instructions, including pictures, for setting this bit up. The most straightforward technique I've seen.

forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
"forestgirl", the woodshop demos link you posted, refers to the "locking miter bit" setup, not the "drawer lock bit". These are quite different. Is there also a drawer lock bit setup on the woodshopdemos site? I can't seem to find it!
Ooooops! Sorry! That's my egocentrism showing -- I'm on the verge of going to the locking miter for my jersey cases, and had blinders on.
I just went through their menu and don't see anything on the drawer lock bit. It would be worth suggesting to them as a topic. I'm sitting here lookint at the drawer-lock joint on my old oak desk -- it's of the sort you could use the same technique as with the miter lock bit, but I can't tell if that system would work with the Lee Valley profile.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
They have setup instructions on their website. I have one of their small bits, works great once set up properly, stong joints on BB plywood cases. I use push blocs and a tall fence on my router table.
Adrianna,
The instructions came with the bit when I purchased it (in store).
As per my post (#16) the is a link at the Lee Valley web site.
Cheers, Todd
