Good Evening all,
I am making a small shaker side table and am working on the drawer now. I am making the table out of cherry and I started laying out the dovetails for the drawer. I thought to myself that I would need to go out and buy some Aspen or Poplar for the sides of the drawer. I have about 500bf of Maple in the barn and I thought to myself why not use Maple cause its free? Am I asking for trouble using maple for my drawer sides instead of Aspen or Poplar?? Its very clean and nice looking Maple. No figuring, just plain sawn growth rings. What do you guys and Forestgirl say??
Thank-you,
Jeff

Both soft maple & hard maple make excellent drawer sides. I produce from 50 to 100 drawers per year and I use soft maple. Several of my clients want maple and only a few care what I use, in that case I use poplar because it is less expensive. Most of these drawers are for vanities and kitchen cabinets.
Use the maple.
