Friends,
I snagged a piece of wood while fishing last fall that has a very unique shape. It appears to be a piece of heartwood from a cedar tree. I would like to display it in my office but don’t know how to remove all the algae and moss nor how to prepare it for display. Do I stain, oil,or varnish it. Any guidance would be most appreciated. Any book reference would also help.
Please respond to my email at [email protected].
Thanks!!
BJ

I don't want to go fishing with you! Interesting question.
I presume the wood was quite wet, duh! Ideas
1. Try taking it to a car wash and use the high pressure water wand.
2. If its really bad, use a power wash on it.
3. Use a soft brass wire brush, BBQ type
4. It its really big and bad, use a wire brush in a drill or such.
5. If you wash it, let it air dry a long time out of the sun.
The type of finish will depend on how smooth the surface is. If its cedar it will be soft, and somewhat rough. BTW take it easy with the power wash it will eat wood and leave it fuzzy. Stand way back with a soft spray to start and work your way closer.
I would tend to look to one of the clear wood protective materials to keep it natural looking. some are like water, or leave it natural.
Try some other finishes that will be out of sight.
Just some ideas
Curt
