Can anyone recommend a benchtop drill press? Or a review of drill presses?

The new Delta Shopmaster 12" variable speed is a good unit for the price...around $150 US. Speed range of 500-3500 rpm, 1/3 HP and a lot of cast iron to dampen vibration. Quill travel is around 3". I bought one recently to replace my old Craftsman 15" unit which does not have a geared table lift.
Thus far, I've had no reason to complain. I put a 2" multi-tooth bit on it and cut several holes in 5/4 with no problems. Plenty of power, and the flexible lamp is a nice touch.
Regards,
Ron
Roninottawa, where did you buy your Delta? I assume you live in Ottawa? I'm in Montreal.
I'm planning on making cabinets for the kitchen, bathroom, etc. I'm also new at this, so I'm not sure what my needs are. Any advice for a starter like me? Not to mention that I have limited space for stationary tools in the garage.
I bought mine at Home Depot. I think there are at least 4 in the Montreal area, but the only one I've actually visited in in the St. Henri area, just down from Westmount.Regards,Ron
I have a Delta Benchtop's, 12" and it has served me well. I've used it for Forstner bits, sanding drums, regular drilling, and have been happy with it. The stop holds fast, which is important when you're drilling a couple dozen Forstner holes to fit tiny picture frames into. You might want to do a search here at Knots on the variable speed model [e.g., Delta drill variable] as there are some who think it's inconvenient in a way.
Beware of going super-cheap and not getting a ratcheting table.
What kind of work would you be doing? What kind of clearance and quill travel would you need?
