   If it's one with the 8 speeds I wouldn't worry about it. I've used a similar machine and it was quite nice and very versatile. Consider how you are using it if you are having troubles. Often the solution is more technique than mechanical. We had that same drill press in a metal shop and pushed it to it's limits and were very pleased with it.  Ifyou change to regular pulleys you will be  limited to 4 speeds unless you go to a three phase motor and VFD.

   I do not know, but a pair of stepped cone pulleys might set you back $80.00

     In my humble opinion, the answer is NO.  I had that drill press.  It was a honey.  Because it didn't have have a light and the rack and pinion adjustment, I traded for Sears 20" model.  The thin belt operated so much smoother and was easier to change speed.  The speed range was much better and I liked the platform better.  It also had a positive stop on the quill.  I'd like to have that drill press back.

   mez,

   I bought my Sears drill press in 1975.  I took one look at that skinny little belt, and said, order me a pair of replacements, I know it won't last long.  I'm still using the one that came on the machine.  It's amazing how well the thing works.
