Hi all,
I have a Delta 17-900 that I bought used a little while ago. I’m trying to get it set up and have encountered a couple of issues. In trying to reduce the vibration, I noticed that the motor pulley and the spindle pulley turn fine with no vibration, but the center pulley wobbles like crazy. I checked these without the belts on by hand. I assume that the bearings need to be replaced on the center pulley. I am also having a problem with runout. I’ve checked runout on just the taper and it is zero. At the tip of the chuck, runout is .004-.006, but the chuck does have a small amount of surface rust on it (from previous owner). I chucked in a 1/2″ bit and took a reading 1/2″ below the chuck tip and was getting .008. I have tried to clean the inside of the chuck (where it meets the taper) and I have cleaned the taper. Should I be looking at replacing the chuck?
Thanks,
Eric

If the center pulley wobbles like crazy, it may not be a bearing issue. Check to see if the pully has been spun on the shaft. This causes the shaft to wear and the bore in the pulley to become hourglass shaped. Assuming the shaft isn't trashed, the best solution to this is a new pulley.
If the runout at the taper is good, you may be able to just clean the chuck taper and put it back in straight.
