I was wondering if anyone out there has come up with a solid technique for drilling multiple holes for spindles WITHOUT a drill press. I’m building a crib and want to know if there is a way to do so using what i have, i.e. a router. I’m looking to have the spindles come through the mortise and then be wedged. Also the spindles will be squared/rectangular except for the tenons. Obviously i will need to drill a good amount of these so a way to keep them consistent would be optimal. thanks for the help.

There are a couple of jigs for drilling perpendicular and angled holes. Check with your woodworking supplier. Prices range from about $15-50 (rough estimate)

Assuming you have a plunge base for your router, and the appropriate twist bit, you could make your own jig for doing repeat holes. A toggle clamp or two for holding the stock would be handy, and quick to shift the stock to the next position.

bldean,
As an alternative, I put a grove in the rails and make a square tenon with a shoulder. Using spacers between the spindles with a touch of glue keeps everything tight...and a lot easier to assemble.
How about a good old dowling jig, just keep sliding it down the rail.
