I have a batch of 35mm holes to cut for European cup hinges. I purchased a jig for my hand drill and a 35 mm forstner bit from Rockler. The amount of pressure needed and heat generated from each hole makes 40 of them pretty daunting. Am I asking too much of the hand drill, and need to be using a drill press (which I don’t have) instead? Thanks for any input.

Treistmans,
You are correct, a drill press would be better suited to handle this task. But since you don't have one, a hand drill can do it, if it's a well built drill, not a cheapie.
Good Luck,

Drilled many with a hand drill. But carbide is the best when used for many holes.
1 3/8 is close enough in a pinch. Get a drill press and a pre drilled door (makes set up easy) Make a larger table for the drill press and bolt it down (clamp or bolt down the drill press too) Install the drill bit and then "plunge" in the the pre-drilled hole with the power off. attach a fence to the new table against the door, pencil a line on the fence at the end of the door. Let the drill bit up and remove the door. Drill practice hole in an offcut and set the depth stop. Return the door if feeling cheap and save the offcut for next time.
I have the same Rockler jig. I bought the carbide forstner bit. I havent had a prob with it and Ive used it on a complete set of hickory doors for a kitchen. It might be the bit or your technique. I set mine on my workbench which is low enough to where I dont have to put a lot of pressure on the drill just weight and let the drill bit do the work for me.
