I have been following plans for a cradle that require me to drill precise holes in the end of square stock without acceptable results. Would you please tell me the best way of doing this. I do have a bench mounted drill press with access to the back of the bench it is mounted on, and the top of the press can be rotated over the bench. It would be nice to build a jig for this operation, but I haven’t found plans for one so far. Thank you…Fred

Hey Fred.
Check out this video by Gary Rogowski. It should handle what you're trying to do.

If not, let us know and we'll keep digging around for some ideas.

Thank you very much for your reply and for your help. I think Rogowski's tape will do it. Fred
Hey Fred,
The drilling jig I use is pretty simple as long as your drill press table rotates. Please check out the on-line video that Matt recommended.
If you have long stock to drill, then you also need to loosen the drill press head and swing that out to the side. Put something underneath the stock you're drilling to push against. And clamp the drill press down to your table just in case. If you're drilling shorter stock, then just put something under each piece as a spacer between it and the bottom of the drill press. Good luck. Gary
Thank you very much for your advice on this Gary. Long stock was the problem as you guessed. I have the drill press bolted down, as it is a heavey old sucker and I don't want it falling on my head. Both the drill press table and the top part of the press rotate. So, there is no problem following the instructions you have sent. My problem was building an adjustable jig that would hold stock precisely aligned. The top of the press swings through an arc, of course, and this meant alot of chopping and changing with the stock I was working with (different thicknesses). As I didn't have an adjustable jig, this meant errors crept in all the time. Your article (#104), which is very good, by the way, has given me enough information to solve the problem. As an aside, I was surprised when I started asking around about how to handle this problem and had difficulty finding a good answer. I felt that many people just had to be doing it, but apparently this is not the case. So, thank you again, both for your writing, and for taking the time to comment. Fred
PS. I'll take simple over complicated every time... :-)
