Hi Gary,
I have your book and DVD — I am very impressed with your practical woodworking advice. I have a small wood shop at home and I am interested in purchasing a drum sander. I could spend up to $2,000 for one. The last review done by FWW is 2000 and I think there has been a great change in drum sanders since.
I have been reading about the ShopFox W1678 and the Woodmaster models but I am unable to judge the best value.
I would appreciate your advice for a best value drum sander.
Thanks,
Al

Hi Al where can I get the dvd for Garry's book. Tks Mark
Hi Mark,
I got Gary Rogowski's Router Joinery DVD at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Router-Joinery-Fine-Homebuilding-Workshop/dp/1561587141
It is a great value at $15, worth twice this price.
Wait until you see Gary's router table. Amazing what you can do if you know what you are doing.
I also bought Gary's -- The Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery (Hardcover)
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Illustrated-Guide-Joinery/dp/1561584010/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b/102-9003655-9062567
Great buy at $26.00
Cheers

Hi Al thanks for the info. I have watch Garry on the FWW makeing the small table and I find he has a great "regular joe " way about going about it .Have fun woodworking but respect your tools
Al,
I'm sorry I have no advice. I don't have a drum sander. If I were going to get one I'd look at a few things: the flatness of the platen, how easy it is to change belts, power transmission, but most importantly how flat does it keep pieces. I'm concerned about cantilevered models and their not keeping the wood parallel throughout a cut. So then you have to rerun pieces through to get the sides evenly thicknessed. Oh, and check for good dust collection. Good luck. Thanks for the kind words. Gary
Gary,
Your suggestions make a lot of sense, and they are very similar to the selling points Woodmaster advertises for their drum sanders. I guess it all boils down to quality.
I am surprised you don't have a drum sander, I wonder if it is all that necessary.
Maybe there is a myth in woodworking -- that the really accomplished woodworkers like you have all these expensive tools. You must have a special way to prepare the wood in the various stages not to rely on having a drum sander.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Al

Al,
I prep my wood like anybody else using a jointer, band saw, and planer to get my stock thicknessed and sized. I just switch over to other tools for flattening and removing milling marks. I've sanded too much in my time so I use my hand planes and scrapers and then what little sanding is left is done quickly by hand. All the best. Gary
