I AM CONSIDERING THE PURCHASE OF A CANTILEVER TYPE DRUM SANDER . I HAVE READ THE REVIEWS IN FINE WOODWORKING #145 , AND THE CUSTOMER REVIEWS AT AMAZON.COM . THE CHOICE IS BETWEEN THE PERFORMAX AND THE DELTA . I GET THE FEELING THAT THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH THE DELTA MACHINE IN THE AREA OF THE TABLE RAISING MECHANISM WHICH USES A RUBBER BELT TO DRIVE THE RAISING SCREWS .
I WOULD WELCOME ANY AND ALL THOUGHTS AND EXPERIENCES THAT ANYONE HAS HAD WITH EITHER OF THESE TWO MACHINES .

I own a Performax 16-32. Used it on white, walnut, cherry, and Oak. It works great and I would not be without one. I wish I had the money for the next size up.
The main gripe I have concerns how the cantilever adjusts. It is very imprecise and requires a great deal of trail and error the get it exactly parallel to the bed. Be sure to get the extension tables if you are doing any long (4' +) lumber.
Also, it is easy to burn a sanding belt with resinous lumber or a hard knot. Use fine increment sanding--don't try to hog down a board. The belts are expensive and any burns will render to belts next to useless.
I have a Ryobi 16" open end, have used it about five years. I've run hundreds of board feet of Walnut, Oak, Cherry etc. through it. No problems. Don't run knotty pine through it, the sanding belts will plug up. Don't try to take off to much material it will burn the wood and plug the sanding belts. It costs about half as much as Performax.
HI BOB
THANKS FOR THE INFO . I WILL CHECK OUT THE RYOBI MACHINE . I UNDERSTAND THEY USE SHIMS TO ADJUST FOR EXTRA WIDE , 32" , STOCK . DOES THAT CREATE ANY PROBLEMS .

Bob,
Just thought I'd mention that Klingspor make a paper for resinous woods. I use it mostly for Indian Rosewood, Cocobolo ect. It also works well for pine. No more clogged belts.
HELLO MIKE
THANKS MUCH FOR THE INPUT . HAVE YOU EVER HAD THE CHANCE TO COMPARE THE ADJUSTMENT METHOD ON YOUR MACHINE WITH THE DELTA OR RYOBI ?

I've never had the opportunity to compare adjustment methods on other sanders, but Performax is really bad--can't imagine what the designers were thinking. I'd be interested if someone could describe the difference in other machine adjustment mechanisms.
PS, I just read the post about using Simple Green to clean clogged belts. Halleluiah!! I sure hope its true. It will save me a bundle.
you can wash your cloth belts in "simple green" cleaner - it really gets the crap out. No attachement to this product. i hang my belts on the wash line and the neighbours ask what do i wear??
Thank you! Thank You!
I'll try it in the morning-man I hope it works. Those belts get expensive and use my sander a lot.
