hello everyone,
my question is regarding green wood and what would be the quickest method of drying it. im currently building a hope chest and wanted to use bun feet . it is being built from walnut and i couldnt find any feet premanufactured in walnut so i decided to turn them myself. i purchased some walnut blanks that are 5 inch in diameter by 3 inches thick.i have some experience turning bowls from green blanks.normally i rough turn them, box them up and let them dry for a year or so before resuming the final turning. is there a faster method of drying them? i have read various articles on the cell structure ruptureing methods that will shorten the drying time to a couple of weeks by boiling or freezing . how well dose this work? if they are sealed well after turning do i need to worry about them checking as they dry over time? i would apreciate any advise anyone can give me on this…….thank you!

Any local kilns? If I wanted to dry something like this, I'd take it to my local sawyer/lumber guy who dries his own stuff. I'm sure he'd toss something this small in for free.

Bill,
I'm new to this forum and have been lurking up to this point. Two ideas come to mind and I'm sure others will add comments after this posting. There have been some articles over the years in regard to the use of Micro Wave Ovens to dry material prior to turning. There is also the use of PEG ( Poly Ethelyn Glycol ) hope the spelling is close. Given these new threads perhaps others will jump in.
Regards
