I attended a woodworkers show in Tampa,Fla this winter that was very informative.I sat in on the session on routers and learned that you can buy a fixed based router with two bases-one with a fine adjustment for use in the router table and the other to be used as a hand held router. I have a plunge router. The only router sets with two bases that I can find have one plunge base and one fixed base. Where can I find what I’m looking for and what make would you suggest.. Woodworking is a hobby for me and I would classify myself as medium to advanced in proficiency Thanks for your time, Ron

I am not sure what you mean by fixed base? I think your are referring to the Porter cable Model 694VK which comes with both a plunge base and a helical adjusting base. The advantage to two bases is that you can leave one base in the table and have another readily available for hand held use, making change over time quicker. At 1-3/4 HP this router is a bit low horsepower wise for table use. I an not aware of others making 3HP routers with two bases.
We do not make specific brand recommendations but rather try to give you the information to make wise buying decisions. For table use I like helical adjusting routers with 3HP or more and the ability to take 1/2" bits. Even better is any high horse power router in a lift mechanism.
With best regards,
