If the original bag was a coarse weave that let fine dust through, going to an aftermarket felt bag or cartridge filter will definitely help to reduce the harmful dust in your shop's air.
A different filter might make a minor improvement in air flow, but probably not enough to justify the cost. If you need more airflow you will need either a more powerful collector or a more efficient piping system.
