I’m thinking of buying the 15″ Grizzly 4053 planer. I have a lot of pine and aspen to plane down and hope to take 1/8′ or more per pass. How powerfull of a dust collection system would I need? I would hook my table saw to it also, but only one tool would operate at a time.
Thanks, John

I have a Delta 15" planer and an Oneida 2HP Super Gorrilla system. It works fantastic although I can fill the 35 gallon drum in about 15 minutes of continuous planing. When I bought the unit, I called Oneida for advise on what size to buy. They not only sized the unit correctly, they recommended a 6" diameter branch line for the planer. This matches with the suggested size in the FWW dust collection book. They also said it would work provided the planer was connected to the unit by less than 15' of ductwork/hose.
As I understand it, what one needs is enough volume of air to carry the amount of chips at a certain speed. For a 15" planer, one needs a unit that can support a 6" line at about 4000 cfs and have enough static pressure to overcome the weight of the chips. I'm not an ME so I could be off a bit here. But, this is why having the "fan curve graph" for the unit you're considering is so important.
If you call a reputable dealer/manufacturer and give them a list of the machines, they will be able to recommend the correct size unit and ductwork/hose for your setup. I sized mine for the planer and it works great for the tablesaw, jointer, bandsaw... Recommend you buy/borrow the FWW dust collection book and check it out - lots of good tips, tricks and advise. Also, Oneida's web site has tips, info and pictures you can check out to get an idea of what you will need. Oversizing will work, but cost more to operate.
Thanks for taking the time to make such a thoughtful and informative post.
