I have a central vac system in my house that is used for cleaning the house. I also have a workshop and was wondering if I could use the same vac system to collect dust in the workshop

I seriously doubt it. You would rapidly overwhelm your central vac, and it doesn't move the volume of air that a dust collector does.
hi - I think even a massively powerful central house vacuum might be rated around 200 CFM for air flow. Even my 1hp 110v is rated at 450 CFM and I am upgrading as that is not nearly enough for a couple of larger tools I now have, needs to be 2X+ that for larger tools. You could vacuum with the central system, but its not going to "collect dust" very well at all and will fill up the canister way, way faster than vacuuming the house.
I would consider upgrading to a shop vac & eventually a dust collector unit. Yes they are expensive but are better your health in the long run. Sometimes wood shops start out with a bag filter, but they aren't as efficient as a cartridge. I also agree with @user-6001446. Vacuuming the house and the using it for air filtration in your shop don't mix.
G’day Tracie,
I’d say simply try it. You may decide to put a larger catch bag on your Collector if possible, but hook a hose on one of your messiest machines and see...
None of us know how powerful your system is. (It would be great if it did work!)
A bit of your time may save you big money - or it may not. Good luck
