I have a 1100 CFM Jet dust collector equipped with a 5 micron bag.
I’ve run it ~2 years without cleaning the air discharge bag other than vacuuming the inside of the bag when I dump the collector.
The collector seems to be losing it’s efficiency. I was wondering if it makes sense to wash the 5 micron bag and if so how should it be done.
I will contact Jet with this question, but thought I would see what the experts have to say.
Thanks, Dave

After two years, it's time to clean/inspect/repair or replace the motor and brushes. Chances are you can just blow compressed air from the outside of the bag in, and same thru the motor, then see if there's any improvement.
Thanks for your reply. The fan is a direct drive, driven by a TEFC motor, so I don't think that is the problem. If I remember correctly from my industrial days, we used to wash dust collector bags. I'm just not sure if they were made of felt.Dave
Also , it is a good idea to inspect the pipes. You will be surprise how much stays in the pipe , specially dirt from the jointer and planer
is it typical of dust systems that you have to replace the filters? or is it typical that like wet/dry vacs that you can just wash them out?i need a system and have been looking.hope this doesn't sound naive
You have to replace all filters eventually, even the shop-vac ones. There's only so many times you can keep blowing them out and reusing them before they clog up completely. It's possible to burn out your motor if you use a clogged filter, so always be careful.
LD,
I waited until my wife was out of town, then through them in the washer.
I turned them inside out 1st.. Came out great. Not too sure how it will effect the filtering of micron size particles.. But they sure look clean.
One caveat in washing filters. I found an old shop vac type lying around when I was using the pressure washer. Worked pretty good when I started but got a little to close to the filter and blew it all to pieces.

I contacted Jet, asked the person on the phone my question, and was told that they would have some one from the technical area call me. I gave them my number and I've been waiting since. After ~ 5 days, no one has called!!
Is this the normal response you would expect to get from Jet.
I did recall from my industrial days that we washed dust collector bags. So I checked with my technical friend from my previous employer and sure enough, we always wash bag filters.
So on a warm and friendly spring day, I'll try that.
Thanks for your responses
Good trick is to put your shop vac hose on the outlet side so it blows instead of sucks. Now take the hose and run it over the out side of the dust collector bag(s) to blow the dust off the inside and into the collector bag. Do this every so often and the efficiency of the system stays up. As the bags get impregnated with the fine dust they cause back pressure and the system looses CFM....this method also does not require removal of the bags....do this when you see efficiency drop and wash the bags every few years..
I think you will find that most filter manufacturers will tell you NOT to wash them.Howie.........
2 days would be my max waiting time! Use the squeaky wheel theory and get some results. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
