I need to install a good dust collection system in my 50 sq. metre shop and would appreciate hearing from any of the European contingent about how they have solved this issue. What brands are recommended? I am in Ireland. Thanks, Jim

HI Jim,
I'm not in Ireland, but used to install dust collection in a plant that made 1000000 tonnes of dust per year (cement)
First,
Look at the machines you need to vent and figure out how much airflow you need at a suction of about 6"WG. (like a vacuum cleaner, a dust collector pulls through a lot more air when there's no restriction on the air intake. How much airflow goes through a vacuum cleaner hose when the thing is 80% blocked?)
The suction is needed to overcome air turbulence and the restriction of the filter.
Then,
Tally up the numbers and calculate what size pipe you need to have to obtain a velocity of 18m/sec horizontally and/or 13m/sec vertically.
This is the size of pipe you need to install.
Minimise the number of bends and look to dust collector pipe design for details from here.
Wide sweeping bends are better than sharp ones, usually.
There are some workarounds, but I'll stick to basics.
(my recollection of numbers is hazy as I've been out of the trade for 10 years.)
As far as details and the how-to:
Closer to your home, the UK HSE have a good collection of information that shows how to do things:
http://www.hse.gov.uk/woodworking/dust.htm
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/woodindx.htm (see local exhaust ventilation) which gives http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/wis23.htm amongst others.
The links off a website by a gentleman named Bill Pentz were industry standard and give all detail for home design of a dust system.

I've got a link purloined from the internet that mentions Felder - perhaps off the Felder site on setting up dust collectors?

Eddie, many thanks for the information and leads to some great sites. Now that I have a better understanding of what my requirements are I can make an informed decision on which machine and ducting size I need. If anyone has any opinions on the various dust collectors available here in Europe I would appreciate hearing from them also. Jim
Hi Jim,No dramas.Felder make a good portable unit, however, as with all things branded "felder," quality comes at a cost. THis would be available locally to you.Cheers, eddie
Mr. Pentz gives the highest points to the Felder RL160 or RL125 as another mentions. He has done the research into the European air quality standards. Very nice machine and compact. The typical two stage cyclones used are larger, but a few dollars cheaper. The fundamental two stage comes down to a few things whether its in North America or Europe. The quality of the filter, ability to move enough air and the piping.
